New Tip Deduction Qualifications Released by Treasury

On September 2, 2025, the Treasury Department announced a draft list of 68 professions eligible for a fresh "no tax on tips" deduction. Part of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," enacted on July 4, 2025, this deduction applies to federal income taxes for the 2025–2028 tax years, offering significant potential savings for many in service-based roles.

The deduction caps at $25,000 per person annually in qualified tips. It's structured as a "below-the-line" deduction, beneficial for those taking the standard deduction, yet it doesn’t influence the calculation of adjusted gross income (AGI).

Here is the Treasury’s draft list of qualifying occupations, organized by sector:

Beverage & Food Service:

  • Bartenders
  • Wait staff
  • Food servers, non-restaurant
  • Dining room attendants
  • Chefs and cooks
  • Food preparation workers
  • Fast Food and Counter Workers
  • Dishwashers
  • Host staff at restaurants
  • Bakers

Entertainment and Events:

  • Gambling dealers
  • Gambling cashiers
  • Dancers
  • Musicians and singers
  • Disc jockeys (excluding radio)
  • Entertainers and performers
  • Digital content creators
  • Ushers and ticket takers

Key Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a qualified tipped worker in an eligible profession.
  • Tips must be voluntary and properly reported on respective tax forms.
  • Must file jointly if married and provide a Social Security Number on tax returns.

Deduction Specifics: Maximum deduction is $25,000, phasing out as income rises beyond set thresholds ($150,000 for single filers, $300,000 for joint filers). Moreover, while it reduces taxable income, tip income remains subject to payroll taxes.
