Key Tax Deadlines for January 2026: What You Need to Know

As we usher in the new year, it's essential for individuals to stay on top of key tax deadlines in January 2026. This month encompasses crucial dates for estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Prepare for these deadlines to ensure a smooth tax filing season.

January 12 - Tips Reporting Deadline

Employees receiving over $20 in tips during December must report them to their employer by January 12. Use IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement including your signature, full details such as your name, address, SSN, and your employer’s information, and the total tips received during the reporting period.

Your employer must withhold FICA taxes and income tax from these tips. If your regular wages do not suffice to cover these amounts, they will be noted in box 8 of your W-2, and you’ll have to settle the uncollected taxes when filing your annual return.
