Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in February 2026

As February 2026 approaches, it's vital to stay on top of essential tax deadlines. In this guide, we'll explore estimated tax payment options, tip reporting requirements, and deadlines for updating your W-4 exemptions. Keeping track of these dates will help you avoid penalties and ensure compliance.

February 2 - Estimated Tax Payments Due

Missed your January 15 estimated tax installment? You have the option to submit your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) by February 2. This can prevent any late payment penalties for your final installment if you file and pay by this date. Unable to meet this deadline? Ensure you file and pay your taxes by April 15 instead to avoid additional fines.

February 10 - Reporting Tips

Earned $20 or more in tips during January? It's time to report them to your employer. You can opt for IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement that includes all necessary details such as your signature, full name, address, Social Security number, and your employer’s name and address. Remember, your employer is obliged to withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your wages for these tips.

If your earnings can't cover these withholdings, your employer will note the shortfall in box 8 of your W-2. You'll need to settle this amount when you file your return for the year.

February 17 - W-4 Exemption Updates

Claimed exemption from income tax withholding on your W-4 last year? To maintain this for another year, provide a new W-4 form to your employer by February 17. This ensures your exemption status continues seamlessly.

Weekends & Holidays

Should any of these deadlines coincide with a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, don't worry. They'll automatically shift to the next business day that isn’t a holiday.

Extensions for Disaster Areas

Being in a disaster-designated area? That extends your tax deadlines. To verify if your area qualifies and to find out the extended dates, check FEMA's website or the IRS Disaster Relief page.
