June 2026 Individual Due Dates: Q2 Estimates and Compliance Deadlines

Summer is almost here, but as a growing service-based business owner, you know your financial obligations do not take a vacation. We are approaching the midpoint of 2026, which means it is time to review your mid-year tax responsibilities. At Desert Lily Bookkeeping, we know that staying compliant can feel like a heavy mental load, especially when you are busy serving clients.

This June brings a few key deadlines—particularly for estimated taxes—that require your attention so you can enjoy the rest of your season with total peace of mind. Let us break down exactly what you need to know for June 2026 to keep your finances clear and compliant.

June 15: The Critical Q2 Estimated Tax Deadline

If you are a consultant, real estate transaction coordinator, or creative entrepreneur generating over $200K, this is the deadline that matters most. June 15 is the last day to timely make your second-quarter estimated tax installment for the 2026 tax year. Because the U.S. operates on a "pay-as-you-earn" tax system, those without regular W-2 payroll withholding must make proactive payments.

Man calculating finances

Failing to prepay enough throughout the year can trigger an underpayment penalty, which is based on the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points. Fortunately, federal tax law provides "safe harbor" minimums to help you avoid these penalties.

Understanding Safe Harbor Rules

You can protect yourself from penalties if your prepayments meet one of two benchmarks:

  • At least 90% of the tax you will owe for the current 2026 year.
  • 100% of the tax shown on your 2025 return (or 110% if your Adjusted Gross Income exceeded $150,000, or $75,000 for married taxpayers filing separately).

This highlights exactly why having an organized, up-to-date monthly financial review is essential. If you experienced a massive spike in income this spring, your prepayments need to reflect that reality. We regularly advise clients to review their profit and loss statements before this deadline to ensure their payments align with their actual growth.

Early June Deadlines: IRA Valuations and Tip Reporting

Before we reach the mid-month estimates, there are two earlier dates on the calendar to note.

June 1: This is the final due date for IRA trustees to issue Form 5498, providing the fair market value (FMV) of your IRA as of December 31, 2025. This FMV dictates the required minimum distribution (RMD) you must take in 2026 if you are age 73 or older.

June 10: If your service business employs tipped workers, or if you received more than $20 in tips during May, those must be reported to the employer by June 10. Employers then use this data to calculate and withhold the proper FICA and income taxes from regular wages.

June 15: Extensions for Expats and Military Personnel

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico, June 15 is your deadline to file your 2025 income tax return and pay any tax due. If you need more time, you can file Form 4868 to request a filing extension to October 15, though this does not extend your time to pay any taxes owed.

Special provisions exist for those impacted by the terrorist attacks in Israel throughout 2024 and 2025; eligible individuals have until September 30, 2026, to file and pay taxes otherwise due between September 30, 2025, and September 30, 2026. Additionally, military taxpayers serving in combat zones or qualified hazardous duty areas receive an automatic extension of 180 days after leaving the combat zone or completing continuous hospitalization for a related injury.

Navigating Disaster Extensions and Weekend Rules

Past due notice

Logistically, when a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the IRS automatically bumps the due date to the next business day.

Furthermore, if your business is located in a federally declared disaster area, your deadlines may be significantly extended. Given our roots here in Edgewater, Florida, we know firsthand how unpredictable weather can impact business operations. You can verify current disaster extensions and impacted regions through the official channels:
