2026 Mileage Rate Update: What Businesses Need to Know

The IRS has released the inflation-adjusted 2026 standard mileage rates, vital for calculating deductible vehicle costs. If you're operating a car, van, pickup, or truck for business, charitable, medical, or moving purposes, understanding these updates is crucial for leveraging tax benefits effectively.

Starting January 1, 2026, here are the updated standard mileage rates:

  • Business driving will see a rate of 72.5 cents per mile, a slight increase from 70 cents in 2025, which includes a 35-cent depreciation component.

  • For medical and certain moving expenses, the rate drops to 20.5 cents per mile, down from 21 cents in 2025.

  • The rate remains unchanged at 14 cents per mile for charitable organization service.

The business mileage rate is grounded in a comprehensive study of the fixed and variable costs of vehicle operation. In contrast, the medical and moving rates focus on variable costs, while the charitable rate is set by statute, unchanged for over two decades.

It's essential to recognize that moving-related mileage deductions are generally disallowed except for active-duty Armed Forces or intelligence community members required to relocate by orders. Those supporting charity using personal vehicles may choose to deduct actual out-of-pocket expenses like gas and oil over the standard rate, although repairs and maintenance do not qualify.

Maximizing Business Vehicle Deductions - Business owners can opt for actual cost deductions over standard rates. Volatile fuel costs and potential 2025 bonuses make this method attractive in the first year a car is business-deployed. Although bonus depreciation was phased out, it resumed to 100% mid-2025, offering potential savings.

However, once you choose actual cost methods, reverting to standard mileage rates isn't possible for that same vehicle. Also, these rates aren't applicable for fleet vehicles or those hired out.

Overlooked by many is that parking, tolls, and business-attributed vehicle property taxes are deductible over top of standard mileage rates.

Employer Reimbursements - Employees reimbursed under the standard mileage method must log details like time, place, mileage, and business travel purpose, keeping the reimbursement tax-free. Unreimbursed employee expenses aren't deductible post-2017, following the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Exceptions exist for reservists, state or local officials compensated partly by fees, and particular artists, who can adjust travel expenses directly against income. Eligible educators might also qualify for similar deductions on Schedule 1 or A, given certain conditions.

Self-Employed Vehicles - For self-employed individuals, business vehicle deductions still stand, including interest on auto loans deducted via Schedule C, applicable to either mileage or actual expense methods.

Big Deductions for Heavy SUVs - Larger SUVs over 6,000 pounds aren't hindered by luxury vehicle depreciation caps. For 2026, Section 179 allows up to $32,000 in deductions, combined with bonus depreciation for a substantial first-year deduction. Careful planning is suggested, as vehicle lifespan and disposal could demand recapture of these deductions.
